The Code-Switching Exhaustion and the Power of Collectivist Healing
Understanding the "Invisible Exhaustion" of Code-Switching
Many adult children of the diaspora and immigrants navigate their day-to-day lives by constantly shifting their tone, language, and behavior to fit into a dominant Western culture. This process, known as code-switching, is often a survival mechanism used to ensure professional acceptance and physical safety. However, the mental energy required to constantly monitor how you are perceived leads to what I call the "Code-Switching Exhaustion."
This "exhaustion" is a state of deep, physical, and often psychological depletion that can manifest as chronic brain fog, unexplained body tension, stomachaches, migraines, and a sense of emotional withdrawal. When you spend your entire day suppressing your grief, anger, or even your natural accent to appear "palatable," your nervous system remains in a state of high alert. This constant hypervigilance is a form of labor that often goes unacknowledged or unexplained in traditional, Eurocentric therapy settings.
Why Individualistic Therapy Can Feel Isolating
Standard Western therapy models are built on a foundation of individualism, focusing almost exclusively on the "self" as a separate entity from the community. For those of us from collectivist cultures, such as Arab, SWANA, Asian, or Latinx communities, this approach can feel incredibly lonely and incomplete. Our identities are not isolated; they are deeply intertwined with our families, our ancestors, and our neighborhoods.
In a collectivist framework, healing is not just an individual achievement. When a therapist ignores the weight of your family’s expectations or the history of your community, they miss the heart of who you are. Culturally responsive therapy acknowledges that your well-being is connected to the well-being of the people you love and the environment you inhabit.
Honoring the Family While Prioritizing the Self
A common struggle for children of immigrants is the guilt associated with setting boundaries or prioritizing their own mental health over family needs. We often carry a deep sense of responsibility for our parents' sacrifices and their money stories, leading us to adopt narratives that aren't truly ours. Part of the therapeutic journey involves untangling these inherited scripts to see which ones offer strength and which ones cause harm.
Healing doesn't mean cutting ties with your culture; it means finding a way to honor your roots while reclaiming your own autonomy. In our sessions, we look at your life through a social work lens, seeing you as a person in a complex environment. This allows us to move away from "surviving" the expectations of others and toward "thriving" in a way that feels authentic to your whole self.
